1 January, 2009 21:30:38

Kolkata, Jan 1 (IANS) Inmates of a remand home in West Bengal Thursday tried to set fire to the kitchen and ransacked offices to prevent transfer of two fellows, the police said.

The incident occurred in Howrah district after transfer orders of two inmates of the correctional home - Sajjan Mallik and Rahul Mallik - to Dum Dum Central Jail in north Kolkata were received Thursday evening.

'To prevent the transfer, the duo and their fellow-inmates ransacked the officers inside the premise and tried to set fire to the kitchen,' Howrah police superintendent N.K. Singh told reporters.

'While some inmates scuffled with prison guards, others set fire to the wood and coal dumped inside the kitchen. They even sprinkled kerosene all over the kitchen. However, timely intervention of the prison guards and the police saved a massive disaster,' Singh said.

The officer said they would investigate the matter and take necessary action against the accused, who also alleged that the quality of food they are served was not good.
