New Delhi, Jan 1 (IANS) Veteran Congress leader and union minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, who suffered a second heart attack two-and-half month ago, has been taken off the life support system, hospital officials said Thursday.

'The minister is now off the life support system. He continues to be in the Intensive Care Unit and his neurological condition remains the same,' an official at the Indraprastha Apollo hospital said.

He is still in the hospital, people from the party regularly go to meet him,' Congress spokseperson Manish Tewari told IANS.

Dasmunsi was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Oct 13 following his second heart attack in three months. He was shifted to the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital on his family’s request Nov 20.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has temporarily taken charge of Dasmunsi's information and broadcasting portfolio. Dasmunsi, however, continues to hold the rank of a cabinet minister without portfolio.

Dasmunsi, who has a 10-year history of diabetes, first suffered a heart attack July 8 and underwent an angioplasty and stenting procedure of two coronary arteries in Kolkata.
