7 September, 2008 16:00:14

Kolkata, Sep 7 (IANS) Marxist leader and former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu was in stable condition Sunday, two days after he fell in the bathroom and suffered a head injury, a doctor said.

A medical board has been formed to treat the 94-year-old leader, who suffered internal haemorrhage in the head after he slipped and fell at his Salt Lake residence early Friday.

The board is headed by renowned physician Mani Chhetri.

'His condition is very stable. We are keeping him under observation. No decision on surgery has been taken. He will again undergo medical tests Tuesday,' said Satyabrata Upadhyay, one of the doctors treating him.

Sources close to Basu said he had a normal diet Sunday morning before being driven in an ambulance to the South Kolkata nursing home.

He was accompanied by his family members and Sports Minister Subhas Chakraborty, besides his personal aide Jaikrishan Ghosh.

On Saturday, Basu underwent a CT Scan and was advised hospitalisation. He had earlier received stitches on his forehead after the fall.

Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi and Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee visited Basu's residence Saturday to enquire about his condition.

Basu was chief minister from 1977 to 2000.
