Congress announces relief for Ahmedabad blast victims' kin

27 July, 2008 23:25:44

Ahmedabad, July 27 (IANS) Gujarat's main opposition Congress Sunday announced a relief of Rs.100,000 to the kin of each victim of the serial blasts in Ahmedabad.

Addressing the media with Congress general secretaries B.K. Hariprasad and Rajiv Shukla, Textile Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela and Congress leader Imran Kidwai, Gujarat state unit president Siddharth Patel announced the relief and termed the serial bombings as tragic.

Patel said the central government had sounded an alert only three days before the blasts but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state had failed to take any preventive steps.

Shukla criticized BJP leaders for blaming the central government as soon as the bomb blasts began. 'All this was improper,' he said.

Patel said Congress chief Sonia Gandhi had sent the team of Shukla, Hariprasad and Kidwai who visited the Civil Hospital and the L.G. Hospital and met those who were injured in the blasts.

On Monday the Congress will take out a silent rally from the Income-tax Circle here to the district collector's office to submit a memorandum to the istrict authorities.

A series of 20 blasts Saturday evening claimed 45 lives and injured more than 100 people.
