26 July, 2008 17:28:23

Shimla, July 26 (IANS) Over 700,000 pain-relieving tablets were seized from a drug manufacturing company in Himachal Pradesh for using a name and packaging material similar to a well-known pharmaceutical firm's product, the police said Saturday.

The company, Varsha Pharmaceuticals, had been manufacturing the drug under the brand name Siridan at its unit in Solan town, 45 km from here.

S.P.S. Verma, superintendent of police, Solan told IANS Saturday that the tablets were seized on the complaint of the Enforcers of Intellectual Rights in India (EIRI).

EIRI is an investigation agency specialising in anti-counterfeiting solutions.

Officials of the EIRI alleged that the Solan-based unit was manufacturing the tablet under the brand name Siridan which is similar to Nicholas Piramal's medicine Saridon.

They alleged that the company was even using the packaging material exactly similar to the Nicholas product.

Verma said a case under Section 63 of the Copyright Act and under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the firm.
