60 feet above ground, Delhi Metro to run over flyover

24 July, 2008 19:43:35

New Delhi, July 24 (IANS) With a platform 60 feet above ground level, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is constructing its train line over a flyover making it the highest point in its entire network.

The Metro line is being built over the Karkardooma flyover on the busy Vikas Marg in East Delhi.

'The height of the Metro at Karkardooma is so much because there is already a road flyover there and DMRC has provided an elevation of 6.1 metre above it making the height of the platform from the ground level approximately 19 metres. Thus this point will be the highest in the Metro system,' DMRC spokesman Anuj Dayal said Thursday.

The average height of a platform is 12 to 13 metres from the ground level and the maximum height at present is 17 metres - at Raja Garden in West Delhi.

'The intersection on Vikas Marg is one of the busiest in the city and DMRC is achieving this technological feat without stopping or disturbing the traffic flow,' Dayal added.

The Metro line, from the Yamuna Depot to Anand Vihar, is expected to open by December 2009.

Delhi Metro is the modern mass transport system of the national capital and it ferries over 725,000 passengers every day. Currently it has a network of 68 km and construction work is on to add 125 km more before the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
