Curfew imposed in Jammu

1 July, 2008 15:39:08

Jammu, July 1 (IANS) The authorities here imposed curfew apprehending more trouble after the Ghulam Nabi Azad government withdrew the land transfer order allotting nearly 40 hectares of land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).

The violent protests engulfed several areas in the winter capital and its surroundings, in which more than 70 people got injured, including about a dozen policemen.

Police vehicles fitted with loudspeakers announced the imposition of curfew and asked the people to go indoors as their presence on streets would be construed as violation of law.

However, the announcement has not had any deterring effect on the protesters, who continued to fight pitched battles with the police in many parts of the city and its outskirts.
